Workshop Description

Join Dr. Daniel Fox for a stimulating combination of study and case consultation on the topic of complex borderline personality disorder.

Dr. Fox will provide 1 hour-long lecture that includes specific clinical skills related to working with clients who present with complex borderline personality disorder followed by group discussion and 2 hours of case consultation.

Bring a case or simply listen and learn practical skills and techniques associated with complex borderline personality.

Lecture description

Complex borderline personality disorder (BPD) refers to a more severe and complicated presentation of borderline personality disorder, which itself is a complex mental health condition characterized by emotional dysregulation, unstable interpersonal relationships, self-image issues, and impulsive behavior. The term "complex" is often used to describe cases of BPD that involve additional layers of complexity, such as:

  • Comorbid Conditions: Complex BPD is frequently accompanied by other mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These coexisting conditions can exacerbate the challenges associated with BPD and make diagnosis and treatment more intricate.

  • Unique Treatment Presentation and Resistance: Individuals with complex BPD may not respond well to traditional treatments, such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) or psychotherapy alone. They may require a more comprehensive and tailored approach that addresses the multiple layers of their mental health challenges.

  • Functional Impairment: Complex BPD often leads to significant impairment in various life domains, including work, education, and social functioning. Individuals with complex BPD may struggle to maintain stable employment, complete education, or engage in social activities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define and explain the fundamental concepts related to complex borderline personality.

  2. Describe the key principles, theories, or models that underpin complex borderline personality

  3. Identify and differentiate the main components, elements, or challenges involved in complex borderline personality.
