Taking EMDR to the Next Level in Treating Complex Trauma and Anxiety

Building on the core principles of EMDR 2.0, this advanced workshop is designed for clinicians who are ready to deepen their expertise and confidently address more complex trauma cases. Part 2 focuses on applying advanced EMDR 2.0 techniques to a wide range of mental health conditions, including Complex PTSD, dissociative symptoms, and personality disorder features.

Participants will benefit from step-by-step, in-depth demonstrations that clearly illustrate how specific EMDR 2.0 methods can be effectively integrated into clinical practice. This includes extensive instruction on the Flashforward technique, a scientifically validated method for treating anticipatory anxiety. You will learn how to apply Flashforward both on its own and in combination with the Mental Video Check, a powerful tool in the treatment of anxiety-related disorders.

Special emphasis will be placed on adapting these techniques for clients who are prone to dissociation, such as those with complex PTSD or borderline traits. The workshop will also address how to effectively implement these methods in both in-person and online therapy sessions, with clear, practical guidance on the "how-to's" of each.

Whether you’re looking to expand your EMDR skill set or improve treatment outcomes for your most challenging cases, this workshop provides the tools, techniques, and confidence to take your practice further.

Through a combination of expert instruction and case demonstrations, participants will learn advanced applications of EMDR 2.0

EMD BOMB

In recent years, a number of procedures have been developed to treat complications during therapy. These include breaking through avoidance, preventing dissociation, or helping the patient overcome his or her fear. An example is the EMD bomb, the showpiece of EMDR 2.0. This technique is intended for clients who have difficulty allowing a memory in its entirety due to a lot of cognitive control, those with emotion regulation problems, those who are easily overwhelmed by flashbacks (hyperarousal), or clients who tend to dissociate (hypo-arousal). In this teaching session, therapists learn how to use the EMDR bomb effectively.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain at least two (2) techniques for enhancing activation of traumatic memories.

  2. Explain and employ multiple memory-taxing tasks to aid in reprocessing traumatic memories.

  3. Identify at least two (2) techniques for destabilizing memories including the "EMD bomb".

Flashforward

Previously, EMDR therapy was used only to process the direct effects of disruptive past events ("what happened") to treat PTSD. Currently, its application is much broader. An important example is the use of EMDR therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. In practice, desensitizing patients’ so-called flashforwards is used with the aim of combating anticipatory anxiety and avoidance. To this end, EMDR therapy has gained an important clinical treatment application aimed at the fearful image of an expected disaster ("what could happen"). In recent years, desensitizing flashforwards has also been found an important tool in the treatment of clients with complex PTSD and comorbid pathology to reduce anticipatory anxiety about the treatment itself. This teaching session teaches how to effectively combat anticipatory anxiety in the broadest sense, by desensitizing clients' flashforwards.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how to utilize the Flashforward technique

11:45 am - 12:45 pm

Mental Video Check

The purpose of a mental video check is to determine whether there are still fearful elements in clients’ minds that could prevent them from seeking out certain situations and exposing themselves to them. In practical terms, in the mental video, the patient is asked to imagine, with the eyes closed, going through a typical anxiety-provoking situation from the start to the end. The patient tells aloud what he experiences and encounters in his way. In this teaching session, the therapist learns how to effectively apply the mental video check tool.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how to effectively apply the mental video check strategy

  • Mental Video Check theory and common stuck points

Flash 1.0

The Flash technique was developed by Phil Manfield with the specific aim of helping patients who fear being overwhelmed by the trauma memory to prepare for EMDR therapy. Currently, this technique has evolved into a stand-alone intervention in which the patient is first asked to focus on a positively charged image or memory, which is then linked to the trauma memory. In this teaching session. the original version of the Flash, which can be very helpful in people whose SUD does not go down due to fear of decompensation will be discussed and demonstrated.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the Flash 1.0 technique

  2. Explain how the “Flash 1.0” can be used in individuals suffering from Complex PTSD both face to face and remotely online.

The "Blind to Therapist Procedure"

In this summary teaching class, the most important techniques of EMDR are summarized, and Ad and Suzy provide tips and discuss smart applications and pitfalls for therapists. Specific attention is paid to EMDR 2.0 techniques for advanced therapists. The participant will also learn the "Blind to therapist procedure", a procedure to desensitize a memory without the patient having to describe details of the event. This method can be helpful if it is clear that the patient finds it too embarrassing, or for other reasons too difficult, to share details of the traumatic event, for example, in case of sexual abuse, with the therapist.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the "Blind to therapist procedure"

  2. Demonstrate at least one (1) strategy to troubleshoot issues that may arise during session with clients.
