Workshop Description
This workshop explores the nature of shame and pride as observed and worked with in psychotherapy with survivors of relational trauma, as well as people living
with dissociative disorders. In the first part of this workshop, Dr. Ken Benau will define relational trauma, and differentiate shame and pride as emotional processes, both adaptive and maladaptive, from shame and pride as traumatic mind/body states (i.e., shame and pride states).
Dr. Benau will discuss dissociation as “detachment” and “structural dissociation”, and how dissociation and shame states work together to mute a person’s unique aliveness or “pro-being pride”, in an attempt to maintain relational trauma bonds. Ways of thinking about complex, patient-therapist shame state dynamics that include often intransigent enactments will be described. Several common shame state patient- therapist inter-reactions, intra-reactions, and mindful responses will be discussed. Clinical vignettes, including verbatim transcripts, will be provided to document movement from shame states to pro-being pride.
Throughout this workshop, Dr. Benau and Kathy Steele will discuss how to apply these concepts to clinical challenges. Participants will also be invited to pose questions and make comments to further their understanding.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. Describe one (1) characteristic of relational trauma, as defined by Allan Schore, that
pertains to our working with traumatic shame states in psychotherapy.
2. Identify one (1) characteristic that differentiates shame versus pride as emotional
processes.
3. Describe one (1) characteristic differentiating shame as an emotional process
from shame as a traumatic, mind/body state.
4. Identify one (1) reason understanding shame or pride matter in psychotherapy with
survivors of relational trauma.

About Ken Benau, PhD
Ken Benau, Ph.D. earned his doctorate in clinical psychology with a subspecialty in adult psychotherapy at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, in 1988. His dissertation focused on integrative, mind/body approaches to creative problem solving and symbolization in psychotherapy. Dr. Benau has been a California licensed clinical psychologist since 1990, and maintains a private practice in Kensington, CA, located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Dr. Benau has a special interest and expertise in shame and pride-informed psychotherapy with survivors of relational trauma. Dr. Benau has presented his ideas about shame, pride, and dissociation and their therapeutic applications in psychotherapy with relational trauma survivors at various international conferences, webinars and podcasts. He has also written several non-peer and peer reviewed articles with that same theme, where he introduced the concept and phenomena of pro-being pride, a powerful antidote to traumatic shame states. Pro-being pride is the experience of taking delight in one’s unique way of being and relating to oneself, others, and the world.
