Program Description
This program provides a comprehensive overview of the complex interplay between attachment patterns and personality disorders. The objectives focus on identifying attachment patterns in each personality disorder, utilizing attachment styles to propel clients forward in therapy, and learning techniques to address attachment patterns and pathology effectively. Attachment styles provide nuanced predictions of engagement in and response to treatment.
In this program, we will discuss how the characteristics of insecure attachment laid the groundwork for understanding the attachment-related dynamics in various personality disorders.
The subsequent areas of focus include examining the different personality disorders, including paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, narcissistic, histrionic, borderline, avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive. Each disorder is briefly discussed, with a reference to Harlow's Monkeys and its relevance to psychopathy and attachment. The overt/grandiose and covert/vulnerable aspects of narcissistic personality disorder will also be addressed.
Understanding these concepts and connections empowers clinicians to utilize the clinical applications of attachment theory such that they can apply them to the moment-to-moment process of psychotherapy sessions.

-
Identify at least two (2) attachment-related processes and how to attend to them during therapy.

-

-
Explain how attachment classifications provide a diagnostic tool for case formulation.
