Workshop Description

Specific phobias, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder are quite prevalent mental health conditions and are often associated with high levels of impairment. It is a fact that not all patients with these conditions respond to evidence-based treatments (most commonly CBT), whereas a fair amount of clients also relapse. This calls for well-considered other treatment strategies. There is evidence to suggest that EMDR therapy can be an effective and efficient therapy for specific phobias, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

In this workshop we explain the specifics and the existing evidence base of EMDR therapy for these conditions. Also, we will discuss the treatment strategies that may be helpful in these cases and show how to establish proper case conceptualizations and target selections to make the treatment successful. All of this will be illustrated by means of video clips of patient treatments.

One of the most powerful techniques in the treatment of specific phobia, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder is the flashforward. The Flashforward technique has proven effective in desensitizing intrusive mental representations that are at the core of anticipatory anxiety in individuals suffering from fears or phobias. In this webinar you will learn how to use the Flashforward technique in combination with the Mental Video Check, another indispensable intervention in the treatment of anxiety disorders with EMDR. You will also learn how to use the Flashforward technique in patients who are inclined to dissociate, for example those with complex PTSD or a borderline personality disorder. Various demonstrations will illustrate the significance of the presented material for its use in face to face treatments and online EMDR therapy.

5 major points to be covered:

  • Understand the dynamics of panic disorder, OCD and different subtypes of specific phobia.

  • Be able to make a case conceptualization for panic disorder, OCD, and specific phobia.

  • Have knowledge of the up-to-date scientific evidence of the use of EMDR in panic disorder, OCD, and specific phobia.

  • Understand the concept of “flashforwards” and the significance of them in treating panic disorder, OCD, and specific phobia.

  • Role plays and patient instruction videos will be covering the clinical performance of specific interventions.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. List at least two (2) research findings supporting the use of EMDR with PD , OCD and specific phobias.

  2. Describe how EMDR can be used in the treatment of PD and OCD and specific phobias.

  3. Identify patients’ flashforwards and know how to treat anticipatory fear.

  4. Create case conceptualizations for the treatment of panic disorder, OCD and various subtypes of specific phobia.

  5. Explain the purpose of and implement the Flashforward Protocol.

  6. Explain the purpose of and implement the Mental Video Check.
