Workshop Description
Within the first parent/caregiver intake sessions, the goal is not only to “get the history,” but also to understand the child in context: developmentally, relationally, emotionally, behaviourally, medically, socially, and within the family system. Children and youth rarely present with symptoms in isolation. Understanding the relationships and environments surrounding them is essential to developing an informed and responsive treatment plan.
This workshop introduces clinicians to a systemic approach to assessment within EMDR therapy with children and youth. Participants will explore the developmental, behavioural, emotional, cognitive, educational, biomedical, family, peer, and social components of a comprehensive assessment, while examining the caregiver-child relationship, emotional safety, and home environment.
Particular attention will be given to how communication patterns, conflict, boundaries, parenting responses, caregiver stress, and caregiver mental health can shape or maintain child and youth symptoms. Emphasis will be placed on conducting assessments in a respectful, non-blaming, and trauma-informed way. Participants will learn strategies for asking sensitive questions, responding to caregiver defensiveness or distress, and exploring differing child and caregiver perspectives with curiosity and care.
The workshop also addresses emotional and physical safety, risk screening, and indicators for parent-focused support, family-based intervention, safety planning, or referral to additional services.
Through guided practice and demonstration, clinicians will strengthen their ability to translate assessment findings into collaborative treatment plans that support the child, caregivers, and their relationships.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
✔ Identify at least five (5) areas of assessment that help clinicians understand a child’s symptoms within developmental, relational, family, social, educational, and emotional contexts.
✔ Explain at least three (3) ways family dynamics, caregiver stress, communication patterns, or home environment may contribute to or maintain child and youth symptoms.
✔ Apply a trauma-informed, non-blaming approach to parent/caregiver intake questions when assessing the family system and emotional safety.
✔ Identify when assessment findings indicate a need for parent-focused support, family-based intervention, safety planning, or referral to additional services.
Who should attend
✔ Psychologists, Social Workers, Psychotherapists, MFTs, LPCs, graduate-level Counselors, and Psychotherapists who have completed at least Part 1 of an EMDRIA approved Basic EMDR training.
✔ Therapists working with trauma, attachment wounds, and dissociation
✔ Therapists wanting clinical tools for working with children and their families/caregivers
