Workshop Description

This workshop will focus on a collection of creative protocols and clinical strategies developed by Dr. Carvalho. It will enable the EMDR therapist to expand their toolkit and options when working with their clients. Dr. Carvalho taps into her Psychodrama experience and integrates it into the traditional EMDR protocols.

During this workshop, Dr. Carvalho will present and explain EMDR protocols to target the following:
-
Processing Dreams and Nightmares: how to reach an adaptive resolution.
-
EMDR, Insomnia and Metaphors: how the use of Metaphors can help heal sleep issues.
-
Heal Your Brain, Heal Your Body: creative clinical strategies used in the application of EMDR therapy to heal the body.
-
The Museum Protocol: When a client has repetitive traumas of the same kind.
Dream Protocol:
This protocol is an adaptation of the Recent Events Protocol taught in Basic Training and applied to dream work. Cognitive Interweaves are taught as closure techniques for dreams as well as future templates to help clients reach an adaptive resolution.
EMDR, Insomnia and Metaphors:
Sleep metaphors are presented to clients in order to help them process through EMDR phases 3-7, regarding what keeps them awake during periods of insomnia. The strategies presented are often integrated with the EMDR Adult Drawing Protocol (Carvalho). Included is the use of metaphors and exercises for a future template to improve sleep prognosis, taken from the Dream Protocol (Carvalho).
Two case studies will be presented as illustrations and a video (role-playing demo).
Heal Your Brain, Heal Your Body:
Creative clinical strategies used in the application of EMDR therapy to physical pain, surgeries, and medical interventions. It includes suggestions for "antidotes" as resource measures to help deal with diseases, their consequences, treatment and prevention. A short discussion about the ACE study will help make the connection between adverse childhood experiences and adult illnesses, underlining the importance of healing trauma.
The EMDR Adult Drawing Protocol (Carvalho) will show how pictures can be drawn in order to create the pain image/target for desensitization and reprocessing. The Symptom Role-Reversal Protocol (Carvalho) borrows techniques from Psychodrama, more specifically, from J. L. Moreno’s Role Theory. Cognitive interweaves are used as clinical
strategies to elicit further information from the Information Neuro-Networks in role-reversal. Symptoms are "interviewed" by the therapist while the client is in role-reversal as the symptom, a traditional Psychodrama technique. The traditional phases of EMDR therapy are used to heal the maladaptive information stored in the brain so that healthy responses can emerge for that role. Physical pain is often released and resolved using EMDR applied to symptoms in role-reversal. Role-reversal also allows for the touchstone event to be identified and healed with EMDR therapy.

The Museum Protocol:
The Museum Protocol incorporates EMDR therapy in a way that makes it possible to work on repeated experiences in a shorter amount of time. Although not useful for all clients because of the intensity of the work, there are many people who may benefit from the “short cut” of working on all of these memories in a more summarized manner. Dr. Carvalho will explain the EMDR protocol, how to implement the phases, the importance of a previous triage in order to be sure that clients who would not benefit are excluded, and finally a case study which illustrates its use.
