Course Description

​

Treating complex developmental disorders can be challenging and often requires a skilled, nuanced approach that includes several different therapeutic approaches. Most clinicians use highly integrative ways of working, so that emotions, cognitions, somatic experience, relationships, and other domains of life are included in an individualized and tailored treatment that still follows the basic principles established for working with highly traumatized clients.

 

In this program, we will explore the many options available to clinicians including medication, somatic work, psychodynamic approaches to defenses and resistance, EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ego State approaches, systems approaches, hypnosis, neuro-regulation, general stabilization, and relational approaches. We will draw upon the clinical wisdom of the last 50 years of treatment approaches to complex developmental trauma symptoms and disorders and discuss what has worked and what has not, and with which kind of client. Finally, we will explore a sequenced approach to working with complex trauma dissociation treatment that supports gradual integration and a nuanced balance between processing traumatic memories and focusing on creating positive experiences in the present, that is, developing a life worth living.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to: 

  • Identify at least seven (7) approaches for working with complex developmental trauma disorders, including DID.

  • Create an integrative treatment plan that includes more than one treatment modality for a client.

  • Analyze the pros and cons of various approaches in working with highly traumatized clients.

  • Discuss the general treatment progression in highly traumatized clients.

  • List the sequential steps in treating complex developmental trauma, including dissociative disorders.

  • Utilize at least five (5) types of interventions to help clients resolve trauma and engage in daily life.

About Kathy Steele, MN, CS, APRN

Kathy Steele has been in private practice since 1985, and with Metropolitan Psychotherapy Associates in Atlanta, Georgia since 1988. She was Clinical Director of Metropolitan Counseling Services, a non- profit psychotherapy and training center until 2016. She is a Past President and Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD), and has also served two terms on the Board of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). Kathy served on the International Task Force that developed treatment guidelines for Dissociative Disorders, and on the Joint International Task Force that has developed treatment guidelines for Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. She has received a number of awards for her work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from ISSTD, an Emory University Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Cornelia B. Wilbur Award for Outstanding Clinical Contributions from ISSTD. Kathy has (co)authored numerous book chapters, peer reviewed journal articles, and three books with her colleagues.

What are the requirements for obtaining CEs?

Participants must have paid the tuition fee, watched the entire recorded program, and passsed a quiz with a score of 75% or higher before they will have access to Self-Study CE credits. *For ASWB CE Credits, a mandatory evaluation will need to be completed prior to a certificate being issued.

Do I have to pay extra for CE credits?

No. The cost of CE credits is included with your course registration fee.​
