Workshop Description

Protective parts often take center stage in parts work such as Ego State Therapy and Internal Family Systems work. At times, they may feel like obstacles, slowing progress, blocking access, or even derailing sessions. Yet these protectors carry profound wisdom about a client’s vulnerabilities, needs, and pathways to healing.

This workshop explores how clinicians can partner with protective parts rather than bypass or challenge them. Using skills from parts work models while rethinking how we work and think about protective systems, participants will learn strategies to:

  • Recognize and engage the systemic knowledge of protectors

  • Invite protective parts into memory reconsolidation and emotional processing moments

  • Leverage their guidance to create safe, effective shifts in clients’ lower-brain emotional patterns

  • Balance the influence of protectors with the flow of the therapeutic process

By the end of the session, clinicians will be able to integrate protectors as collaborators in parts work, enhancing both the efficiency and depth of therapeutic outcomes.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least three (3) new ways to conceptualize and orient to protective systems.

  2. Demonstrate two (2) or more examples of language that helps clients access protector wisdom.

  3. Demonstrate strategies for helping clients express genuine gratitude and establish trusting relationships with their protective systems.

  4. Describe how to invite emotional knowings that protectors hold into memory reconsolidation moments to support unlocking and unlearning of problematic emotional patterns

About Juliane Taylor Shore, LPC-S, LMFT-S, SEP

Juliane Taylor Shore, LPC-S, LMFT-S, SEP, (AKA Jules) is a therapist and trainer of therapists in Austin, Texas. She specializes in applying Interpersonal Neurobiology to the healing of trauma and the creation of relational health with the people who come and see her. Jules graduated with a Master of Arts in Counselling from the St. Edwards University in Austin Texas. Jules is an EMDR trained therapist, Internal Family Systems trained therapist, a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, a Relational Life Therapy Certified Therapist, and practices integrative interpersonal neurobiology based couple therapy. Jules became a therapist because she stumbled into a therapist's office when she was in a hard space, fought with him for several months over whether or not feelings are important (she argued they were not), and found herself at the other end, transformed. So, she went to grad school and studied neuroscience to try to prove herself wrong... and here she is writing, speaking, running intensive trauma recovery sessions, and relational healing workshops and couple's intensives, all while teaching Interpersonal Neurobiology to anyone who will listen to her. She has always been passionate about relationships and relational health. Jules is incredibly passionate about welcoming us all, with all of our messiness, and with loving firmness that can create repair and growth.
