Course Description

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an ego state focused therapy. The original ego state therapy developed by John and Helen Watkins (1997) was an early foundation for the treatment of dissociative disorders, so IFS can be adapted for this work. However, it is important for therapists to understand the differences between ego states and dissociative parts in order to be successful with IFS with clients who have dissociative disorders. Individuals with ego states have an observing ego such that they have reasonable voluntary control and awareness when working with parts. This may be partially or almost completely absent in dissociative clients and has many treatment implications.

In this program, we will focus on how to adapt interventions to accommodate for much greater phobic avoidance and conflict among dissociative parts. We will examine some of the concepts of IFS that likely need adaptations, such as unblending and stepping aside. The concept of Self in IFS is different from a model that considers sense of self, with the goal of integration of parts into a cohesive and coherent sense of self being different from the cooperative work of parts in IFS. Treatment implications and strategies will be discussed.
