*Completion of an EMDRIA approved Basic EMDR training is required to attend this workshop.

This workshop provides practical tools and clinical strategies for deepening therapeutic impact by integrating expressive arts with EMDR Therapy

During this workshop, you will learn practical interventions:

  • Integration of Expressive Arts into EMDR: Learn how to incorporate creative modalities into all eight phases of the EMDR protocol to support trauma processing.

  • Nonverbal Pathways to Healing: Understand how art, movement, sound, and sensory-based interventions offer alternative routes to expression and processing for clients who struggle with verbalization.

  • Regulation Through Creativity: Explore how tactile and sensory engagement can support nervous system regulation and enhance client stability, especially in the preparation and resourcing phases.

  • Supporting Complex Trauma & Dissociation: Gain specific tools for working with clients who experience dissociative symptoms, helping them build dual awareness, containment, and internal cohesion.

  • Developmentally and Culturally Responsive Approaches: Discover how to tailor Expressive Arts techniques to suit the unique developmental stage, cultural background, and personal preferences of each client.

  • Hands-On Learning: Engage in experiential activities that can be directly applied in clinical settings, and leave with a toolkit of creative interventions ready for immediate use.

  • Enhancing the Therapeutic Relationship: Use collaborative and imaginative methods to foster safety, connection, and trust between therapist and client.

Workshop Description

Expressive Arts such as drawing, movement, sound, sand tray, and guided imagery offer clients alternative pathways for expression, especially when words are insufficient or inaccessible. These creative tools not only support deeper emotional processing but also provide concrete, sensory-based resources that can enhance affect regulation and foster a greater sense of safety and containment.

This experiential training introduces a range of Expressive Arts interventions that can be integrated throughout the EMDR therapy process from preparation and resourcing to desensitization and integration. Designed for clinicians who work with clients impacted by complex trauma, dissociation, or difficulties with verbal expression, this workshop emphasizes the power of creative modalities to access, process, and transform traumatic material.

Participants will learn how to adapt and sequence arts-based activities within EMDR’s eight-phase model, and how to tailor interventions to meet the developmental, cultural, and neurobiological needs of diverse clients. Special attention will be given to the use of Expressive Arts in stabilizing dissociative clients, strengthening dual awareness, and enhancing access to internal resources.

Whether you're new to Expressive Arts or seeking to deepen your integration of creative methods in EMDR, this training offers practical skills, hands-on experiences, and clinical guidance to enrich your therapeutic toolkit.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least three (3) ways Expressive Arts interventions can be integrated into different phases of the EMDR therapy model.

  • Explain how creative modalities can support clients who struggle with verbalization or have limited access to explicit memory.

  • Demonstrate the use of at least two (2) Expressive Arts techniques to enhance resourcing and affect regulation in trauma treatment.

  • Apply at least four (4) arts-based interventions to facilitate dual awareness and containment during trauma processing within the EMDR framework.

  • Use Expressive Arts activities to meet the developmental, cultural, and clinical needs of diverse client populations.
